Here are 7 lessons by Gumroad's founder ๐Ÿ‘‡

One of the brightest minds in Twitter belongs to @shl . Sahil is a master of product building and value creation. For it, he must know how customers behave as well. I dug into his tweets looking for gems. And yes, I found them.

โ€“

1. Trust First, Sales Second

You won't build an audience just by sharing your affiliate link. Trust precedes sales, 100% of the time.

  • Share your expertise
  • Teach your audience
  • Entertain them with stories
  • Be a friend first, a salesman second.
Donโ€™t sell, educate. Donโ€™t network, make friends. Donโ€™t try to grow your audience, create value for your existing audience. โ€“ Sahil Lavingia

2. People Want Specific Solutions for Specific Problems

These days a Jack of all trades has virtually no power.

You want people to remember you when they think of something.

Just like @david_perell for writing or @jackbutcher for visuals.

Stand out.

Build for everyone and you build for no one. Build for one person and you build for thousands. โ€“ Sahil Lavingia

3. Use Consistency & Social Proof

Social Proof: People want to do things they see other people doing (so they buy).

Consistency: People want to be (and to appear) consistent with previous actions (so they buy again).

Use them.

They are powerful.

Itโ€™s much easier to turn a customer into a repeat customer than a non-customer into a customer. And repeat customers are better at turning non-customers into customers than you are. โ€“Sahil Lavingia

4. People Say โ‰  People Do

There's a huge gap between these two.

People that want to do something go out there and do it.

People that do not just like to pretend they are going to.

Learn to differentiate both.

People who ask for book recommendations donโ€™t read. โ€“ Sahil Lavingia

5/ Authority Leads to Freedom

Everyone has a unique set of skills.

Including you.

From it, share publicly:

  • What you think
  • What you know
  • What you are learning

Slowly you'll become an authority out of it.

Start today.

Enjoy freedom tomorrow.

Turn your time into skill. Your skill into authority. Your authority into an audience. Your audience into an income. Your income into freedom. And your freedom into othersโ€™. โ€“ Sahil Lavingia

6. It's HOW you say it.

Make your content more enjoyable!

  • Stories
  • Analogies
  • Teachings
  • Experiences

Your audience will take more from it that way.

You will become more memorable to them.

Make your audience happy, motivated, and informed, by making your content entertaining, inspiring, and educational. โ€“ Sahil Lavingia

7. Social Proof...

YES, AGAIN

Seriously, there's no easier way to sell.

Who will people trust more?

The creator?

Or other customers like them?

Exactly.

Remember the 3 R's:

  • Ratings
  • Reviews
  • Results

Use them more.

Figure out how your customers can share your product for you. No one can sell your product better than someone who has already paid for it. โ€“ Sahil Lavingia

Bonus: No one will remember

People are awful remembering.

Stop tormenting yourself.

No one cares.

Get out there and create!

Creators often say they're scared of putting themselves out there. What we tell them: Think of the dumb tweets you read last week. Think of the meh paintings. Think of the stupid videos. Can't remember any? Neither will anyone else, about you. Just get started! โ€“ Sahil Lavingia

Thanks for making it all the way to the bottom!

Please, if you found value in this thread, RT the first tweet to share these ideas with more people.
